Terminal contributes to Victoria’s fuel supply network
The Lara LPG Terminal is located on McManus Road, Lara, in the Geelong Ring Road Employment Precinct, about 6km north of the Geelong Refinery.
LPG is a flammable hydrocarbon fuel, mainly propane and butane, stored as a liquid under pressure for easier transport and use as a versatile energy source.
The Lara LPG Terminal receives LPG products from the Geelong Refinery by pipeline and receives product by road tanker from a range of other sources throughout Australia.
The terminal does not undertake any processing of the LPG product other than dosing with a stenching agent to ensure the normally odourless LPG product has an odour, for the safety of retail customers.
The product is stored at Lara and the majority is despatched by road tanker for sale to retail and commercial customers throughout Victoria.
Some product sent to the terminal from the refinery is later returned to the refinery, via the same pipeline, for further processing.
The site has 13 storage vessels, including refrigerated storage, a dual bay product loading gantry, a safety relief flare system and extensive fire protection systems.
Built in the mid-1960s, the Lara LPG Terminal has had, and continues to have, extensive improvements carried out to its safety, integrity and security systems.
The safety assessment for the Lara LPG Terminal Safety Case follows the same process as used in the refinery.
Prepared for emergencies
We have a comprehensive emergency response plan for the Lara LPG Terminal that involves documented procedures, staff training, and maintaining a register of hazardous goods. We conduct regular emergency response exercises in conjunction with emergency service organisations to test our plans.
