Vital infrastructure to deliver energy security and flexible way to supply gas for Victoria
After receiving a positive assessment on the Environmental Effects Statement for a gas terminal in Geelong, Viva Energy is progressing the remaining work to bring this vitally important project to reality.
With the capability to supply more than 50 per cent of the State’s gas needs, our terminal will be able to safely and reliably supply the energy for consumers to heat their homes, water and cook and for businesses to run their operations delivering economic benefit to the State.
The Viva Energy Hub Gas Terminal will:
• Solve Victoria’s gas supply concerns flexibly and cost effectively;
• Unlock a pathway to bring the most cost-effective liquefied natural gas (LNG) from Australian gas fields in northern Australia or from the global market;
• Ensure reliable supply for 2.2 million households in Victoria that rely heavily on gas for heating and cooking;
• Ensure industry has access to a reliable gas supply to help secure jobs and their futures; and,
• Support the energy transition by ensuring enough gas for electricity generation as coal retires and when renewables aren’t generating.
The terminal’s ability to deliver the cheapest gas available on the global market will provide a substantial economic benefit, ensuring the most cost-effective gas for consumers and businesses alike. Because our project avoids the need for significant pipeline works, transmission costs will also be minimised.
The Viva Energy Hub Gas Terminal includes a new pier, a floating terminal to process the LNG which would be located at an existing industrial location adjacent to our refinery and a short pipeline to tie-in to the existing gas transmission infrastructure.
On May 29, 2025, the Minister for Planning announced her assessment of the environmental impacts of the proposed gas terminal, concluding that the potential environmental effects of the project can be acceptably managed.
With construction of the terminal expected to take two years, the terminal promises a complete solution to the structural gas shortfalls forecast to impact Victoria from later this decade.
