An important project for the airline industry

Viva Energy is embarking on a project to enable the supply of Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF) to Brisbane Airport. We have recently received $2.39 million in funding from the Australian Renewable Energy Agency (ARENA) to deliver this important project.

The project involves the refurbishment of an existing storage tank at our Pinkenba fuel terminal so we can store and supply SAF to the market.

The SAF will be blended with conventional jet fuel and delivered to Brisbane Airport, where it will be used by Virgin Australia to refuel their aircraft.

What is Sustainable Aviation Fuel?

Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF) is a fuel made from renewable sources like waste oils and agricultural feedstock.

SAF is then blended with conventional jet fuel to produce SAF Blend Jet A1, which is compatible with existing aircraft and infrastructure but produces significantly fewer greenhouse gas emissions than conventional jet fuel.

SAF will be incredibly important for the aviation industry as it begins the transition to a lower carbon future.

Project overview

Viva Energy will establish a SAF supply chain that includes tank storage, blending and distribution capability to Brisbane Airport. The project will deliver the following elements:

- A 3.3ML storage tank to store ‘neat’ (100%) SAF or blended SAF for distribution to the airport
- Product quality controls, to ensure high quality standards for aviation fuels are maintained
- Certification of the SAF product, to ensure the sustainability attributes of the product are captured and transparent
- A carbon benefit for our customers

This project will be the first use of book and claim technology domestically, enabling airlines to meet their sustainability targets.
