Viva Energy Australia (“Viva Energy”) is proud to sponsor Indigenous Literacy Day in partnership with the Indigenous Literacy Foundation (“ILF”).

Indigenous Literacy Day is a key component of ILF’s Community Publishing Program where ILF works with remote communities to help children and elders produce and publish books in their first language. This program has produced 80 books in the Foundation’s lifetime.

The sponsorship brought a community of 15 children, teachers and elders to Sydney from the remote communities in Katherine and its surrounds (Binjari) to celebrate the books written and illustrated by women from the Binjari community.

Viva Energy’s Community Engagement Manager, Jo Powell said, “We are delighted to be part of the commendable work that ILF is doing to provide equal opportunity for Indigenous children through education, and more specifically through literacy.

“Being able to preserve local language and promote literacy in remote communities is a positive step towards an equal Australia and opens a range of possibilities for future generations.

“This sponsorship is part of Viva Energy’s Indigenous participation work and our goal, and genuine desire, to drive positive social change,” Ms Powell said.

Karen Williams, Executive Director, ILF said “We sincerely thank Viva Energy Australia and their team not only for their generous donation but for their commitment towards our vision of equity of opportunity for all children in remote Australia.

Viva Energy’s Indigenous Participation Plan includes partnerships with the Cathy Freeman Foundation, the National Aboriginal Sporting Chance Academy (NASCA) and the Council for Aboriginal Alcohol Program Services. It also includes an Indigenous Role Model Grants program.
