Viva Energy Geelong Refinery Club Legend Award opens for 2018

28 Jun 2018

Viva Energy has officially launched the 2018 Club Legend Award at a Geelong Cats Next Generation Academy event hosted at GMHBA stadium.

Viva Energy General Manager Refining, Thys Heyns, was at the launch event, alongside members of the Geelong Cats and juniors from the Next Gen Academy, and expressed his excitement to be kicking off the award for 2018.

“Viva Energy is delighted that our local community so enthusiastically embraced last year’s Club Legend Award. We’re really looking forward to uncovering more unsung heroes at sports clubs right across the Greater Geelong region again this year,” Mr Heyns said.

Club Legend Ambassador and Geelong Cats star, Daniel Menzel, also praised the importance of role models and volunteers within sports clubs.

“As a junior playing AFL, I was hugely grateful for the support I received from coaches, players, volunteers, family and friends and it is great to see that support continuing today at clubs across Geelong.

“I know how many unsung heroes there are in Geelong sports clubs and this award is a fantastic way to recognise the support they provide the community.

“It is a privilege to be a part of the Club Legend Award and I look forward to helping celebrate the contributions of the remarkable people who are nominated,” he said.

The inaugural Club Legend Award in 2017 attracted almost 150 entries, with more than $50,000 in prize money given to the 20 winners and finalists and their respective clubs. More than $50,000 will again be won by members of our community and their sports clubs this year.

Mr Heyns said the award is an important part of the refinery’s ongoing commitment to the local community.

“The Club Legend Award is about recognising the remarkable contribution these inspiring role models make to their clubs and to the community.

“We are incredibly proud to be part of this great community and look forward to once again celebrating the amazing people within it.”

Mr Heyns will join a prestigious panel of members from the Geelong sporting community who will decide the ultimate Club Legend, while Geelong residents will also have their chance to vote for the People’s Choice award winner.

All the winners and finalists will be honoured at the Club Legend Awards Dinner host by Viva Energy at GMHBA Stadium on 6 September 2018.

Nominations opened on Wednesday 27 June and close on Friday 3 August.

Nominations can be made at www.ClubLegend.com.au.
