  1. I’ve worked at Viva Energy since mid-2011.
  2. My first job was as an Environmental Program Manager, working across our soil and groundwater program for Queensland, WA and NT.
  3. My role now is as a Sustainability Lead.
  4. I help people reach their destination by presenting a transparent and consolidated view of how our company works towards and reports on our sustainability aims and activities so stakeholders can make informed decisions about how Viva Energy can help them “reach their destination”.
  5. The best part of my job is working with people across our whole organisation to foster sustainability as something they can all work towards no matter what their role. If we all work together across our different teams we can achieve great things.
  6. The biggest misconception people have about my role is that sustainability is just about our environmental performance. It’s much more multifaceted than that covering environment, safety, community, and diversity however environmental performance is where it all started for me on this career journey.
  7. I was led to this career by a sense of always wanting to do the right thing. I still remember being the kid that picked up rubbish in the playground for fun and not punishment. Now my kids are helping me do it too.
  8. I prefer to start the day with a hug from my kids as we talk about the day ahead.
  9. I prefer to end the day also with a hug from my kids as we chat about the day we’ve had!
  10. I am energised when people come to me with a new ‘sustainability’ idea that we can support or explore further. We have so many clever people working at Viva Energy, they’re always thinking, always coming up with ideas.
  11. The most interesting thing I am working on right now is developing our sustainability reporting using the GRI framework and putting together our progress for this year.
  12. The one behavior I attribute my success to is my passion and being open to possibilities because without this passion no one will jump on your bandwagon. Sustainability is a journey through a dynamic, ever-changing landscape.
  13. The one thing that surprises me about working at Viva Energy is the diversity of our people across all functions of our business.
  14. The most funny/memorable moment I had at work was the day I climbed up to the top of a gasoline tank for the first time where I was attacked by nesting plover birds at the same time. It had funniest home video material written all over it.
  15. The worst job I ever had was my first job out of uni. I was tasked with developing an environmental management strategy for chicken manure for the local industry. You could literally say the job stank! I will never look at chickens quite the same but from this, I learned that every industry has their unique environmental footprint. So many industries are now interconnected, and the circular economy is not just a concept.
  16. The biggest mistake I made early on in my career was when I came out of uni, sustainability wasn’t really a thing so I went in search of any job and I was incredibly frustrated. I learned that if you are passionate enough about something, you’ll always find a way back to working in a role that you truly believe in.
  17. The greatest career advice I was given was take on as many learning opportunities and training sessions as possible and fill up your skillset toolbox. Being an environmental professional, this has been key given how broad the roles can often be.
  18. The most important skill every person should have is emotional intelligence, but I think it’s a skill you learn with life experience.
  19. The one topic I wish I knew more about is how to grow coriander, I am truly at a loss.
  20. How do you see this role evolving over the next 5 years? In our lifetime, we face a number of emerging challenges and opportunities with the use of conventional and alternative fuels. Innovation and preparing for what this may mean for our business is essential.
  21. Early bird or night owl? Night owl but driven by coffee when the sun rises.
