Fuel Economy

Change your lubricants and achieve a potential fuel economy benefit of up to 2.5%*

To see if there are fuel economy benefits from using synthetic lubricants, Viva Energy had chassis dynamometer testing conducted to measure the fuel consumption of a prime mover running Shell fully synthetic lubricants.** The results of these tests were then compared to the fuel consumption of the same vehicle under identical conditions running premium quality mineral grade lubricants. The testing was based on an Australian truck duty cycle containing a mix of highway and metro driving.

The testing demonstrated that when using synthetic lubricants (for engine, transmission and rear axle) the vehicle used on average 2.5% less fuel than when using mineral lubricants for the same purposes.*

*Results achieved in chassis dynamometer testing. Testing was conducted using a Western Star 5800 SS prime mover (loaded to 25 tonnes) using a transient drive cycle. The synthetic lubricants used in the testing process were Shell Rimula Ultra 5W-30 (engine oil), Shell Spirax S6 GME SAE 40 (transmission oil) and Shell Spirax S6 AXME 75W-90 (rear axle oil). The mineral lubricants used in the testing process were Shell Rimula R4 L 15W-40 (engine oil), Shell Spirax S4 CX 50 (transmission oil) and Shell Spirax S3 AX 85W-140 (rear axle oil). Testing conducted by an independent 3rd party. Actual effects and benefits may vary according to factors such as vehicle type and composition, age of vehicle, configuration, payload, on road duty cycle, driving conditions and driving style.**For testing purposes, the synthetic lubricants used were Shell Rimula Ultra 5W-30 (engine oil), Shell Spirax S6 GME SAE 40 (transmission oil) and Shell Spirax S6 AXME 75W-90 (rear axle oil).
