Responding to the emissions reduction challenge

While the traditional liquid fuels and lubricants we supply will continue to play a critical role as the energy system transitions to a lower-carbon future, we have a range of initiatives in the new energies sector, to supply lower-carbon fuels to the market in the future.

These initiatives and our commitments to reduce our own carbon footprint, form an important part of Australia’s pathway to a lower-carbon energy system. This includes a net zero target across our non-refining operations by 2030, a ten percent reduction in emissions intensity at our Geelong refinery, and an end goal of net zero across our entire operations by 2050.

The New Energies Service Station is one of a number of development projects in Geelong which will support alternative energies, such as renewable hydrogen.

Project overview

Viva Energy is proposing to construct and operate Australia’s first publicly accessible service station of commercial scale. It will offer hydrogen refuelling and electric vehicle recharging for heavy transport vehicles powered by renewable energy.

In an Australian first, the New Energies Service Station will have the capability to dispense renewable hydrogen in commercial quantities and refuel a fleet of heavy hydrogen-powered trucks and buses. The project will place Victoria at the forefront of Australia’s ambitions for hydrogen as a zero emission solution for the commercial road transport sector.

The New Energies Service Station is Australia’s most ambitious renewable hydrogen mobility project. The site is expected to commence operations in late in 2024 in Geelong.

The New Energies Service Station is proposed for an area of the vacant land around the Geelong Refinery, near the Princes Highway.
