New infrastructure to support energy transition

Viva Energy is proposing new infrastructure at the Geelong Energy Hub that would allow a secure, flexible supply of Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) to be brought to Victoria.

This project would support the community’s energy needs as the energy market transitions to lower emissions alternatives.

Third parties would ship LNG on special carriers from northern Australia or overseas to help meet the projected natural gas shortage in south-east Australia.

In mid-2022, a State Government-appointed Inquiry and Advisory Committee held a public hearing into an Environment Effects Statement prepared for the project.

In March, 2023, the Planning Minister requested a Supplementary Statement to provide additional information about the project’s potential impacts on the marine environment, air quality, noise levels and cultural heritage.
